Archive Intel (Fund IV)- While the SEC’s Books and Records Rule (Rule 204-2) requires investment advisers to keep client records for at least five years, many firms historically deleted data soon after that minimum period. However, the rise of AI-driven analytics is changing this practice: advisory firms are realizing that retaining longer histories of client communications and records can improve AI models, generate better insights, and enable more predictive recommendations. With data storage costs falling, keeping older data is no longer expensive, and industry leaders say the richer historical datasets can meaningfully improve AI-powered advice and prospecting tools. As a result, firms may increasingly keep client records well beyond regulatory minimums, though decisions will vary based on how firms plan to use AI and how they manage data security and compliance.
